Research Interests

Prof Johnny Sung specialises in three areas of skills and applied policy research:


  • National workforce development systems with a special interest in lifelong learning, skills policy and the future of work;

  • Skills utilisation, skills measures and job quality;

  • High performance working especially in the context of business strategies, work systems, innovations, job-skill content and technology.


Prof Johnny Sung is currently (2021-2022) engaged in research projects with the ILO in Malaysia, covering TVET reform, the development of a National Skills Registry and a system of sector skills councils.

As Visiting Research Fellow at the Inst. for Adult Learning (Singapore), Prof Johnny Sung also runs a number of skills related research projects in Singapore which are designed to support policy-makers in government. These projects include national surveys investigating skills matters at the job and organisational levels.
